Frequently Asked Questions about Hair of the Dog Pet Grooming, Santa Rosa

Q: How often does my dog need a toe nail trim?

A: Every 4 to 6 weeks

Q: How can I get my dogs nails shorter?

A: By getting them trimmed regularly, every 4 to 6 weeks. This will cause the “quick” or blood vessel in the nail to shorten, allowing us to take more nail off without harming your pet.

Q: How much is a toe nail trim?

A: $15.00, if you would like them dremmeled (filed down) then it is $20.00

Q: How often does my dog need to be groomed?

A: This depends on the breed of the dog. Longer length coats need to be groomed every 4 to 6 weeks, with brushing in between that time. Dogs with shorter coats need to be groomed every 6 to 12 weeks.

Q: How much does a haircut cost?

A: Our haircuts start at $80.00 and increase with the breed, size and condition of the dog. Our baths start at $30.00.

Q: What does a bath / haircut include?

A: It includes ear cleaning, toe nail trimming, checking their anal glands, the bath and a brushout and/or a haircut.

Q: What are anal glands?

A: They are two sacs near the anus that collect fecal fluids. This is what gives each dog its scent.

Q: How often do the anal glands need to be checked?

A: This is dependent on the dog and the breed, but every 6 to 12 weeks. If you notice your dog excessively licking his anus or scooting his bottom on the ground, it is probably time to have them checked, these are signs that the sacs are full.

Q: What do I do if my dog has fleas?

A: We recommend a 2 step process. First give the dog a flea bath to kill most living fleas. Then when he is all dry put on a monthly flea treatment like advantage or frontline. This will kill the ramining fleas and eggs left behind by the bath.

Q: How does the flea treatment work?

A: The Advantage disperses throughout the dog’s coat, creating a barrier on the skin. This kills all remaining eggs and if/when any fleas bite your pet they will die. This protection lasts for only one month.

Q: Will there be fleas in my house?

A: Most likely, yes. Fleas can travel through walls and hide in the smallest of places. Flea eggs can lay dormant for up to a year without hatching. Then when the conditions are right, they will hatch. We recommend that you wash all dog bedding in hot water to kill eggs and fleas. It is a good idea to buy a flea bomb from your local hardware store and set it off in your house.

Q: How do you apply the flea treatment?

A: With the Advantage and Frontline, you open the package and place a few drops in between the shoulder blades and then place a few drops at the base of the tail. There are other options for flea treatment in a pill form as well.
